Background:
Since commencing my career within the DPI&F culture I have worked in the multidisciplinary areas of cotton and soybean breeding, cotton/barley physiology and agronomy, farming systems/extension and currently irrigation management.
Organisation & Location:
DPI&F, Darling Downs - Dalby
Current Activities:
The RWUE3 extension project aims for positive environment, economic and social benefits by working with industry to improve water management enabling irrigators to maintain production under reduced water allocations and with minimal environmental impact. It would advance from and build upon the current RWUE programs in Qld. The aims are:
• Improved adoption of practices by growers that improve whole farm Water Use Efficiency;
• Develop and deliver economic information on irrigation systems and management to encourage adoption of profitable and WUE irrigation systems and management practices
• Increased grower and consultant knowledge of new technology and decision support systems for irrigation management creating the demand for, and the capacity to deliver, industry consulting services.
• Establishment of on-farm demonstrations of water management and monitoring systems in co-operation with industry consultants
• Technical support provided to growers in implementing their Action Plans during the implementation of the Cotton BMP Land and Water Module
• Facilitate the involvement of the private sector in improving on-farm irrigation and their use by irrigators
• Investigate the potential for incentives by NRM bodies to aid the adoption of practices and consultant services leading to improved WUE
Qualifications:
Certificate in Rural Science – Cotton Production (UNE) 2002,
Associate Diploma of Applied Science - Rural (QDEC) 1992
Expertise: I have some technical expertise and unique skills in
• experimental design in “time of sowing” trials; rainout shelters and black plastic with particular emphasis on induced drought conditions and conventional row configuration trials;
• soil sampling, monitoring crop soil water use using neutron moisture meter, theta probe; diviners and enviroscan technology
• operation of specialised leaf and root scanners, light interception and associated loggers, and automatic weather stations
• irrigation management
Achievements: Receiving a ‘Top Team Award’ from QDPI, FSI Management for my contribution to the successful Hermitage Research Station Plant Science Competition in 1998.
