Petioles are ideal for monitoring nitrate-N and potassium concentrations until mid-flowering. Beyond flowering, leaf tests are a better method of monitoring crop nutrition.

Weed Identification and Information Guide

The Weed Identification and Information Guide, has been compiled to assist the Australian cotton industry with the identification and management of the weeds that are most commonly problems for the industry. Colour photographs including all weed growth stages are available for each weed, and weed biology and ecology information is also provided.

Unknown weeds can be identified from a collection of seedling and adult pictures, or by scrolling through the collection. The seedling collection has been structured with seedlings with similar leaf shapes grouped together. The adult collection places weeds in the same order as they occur in the seedling collection. Move directly to the weed after identification.

Plants are primarily identified by their flowers, so always ensure that the weed identification is corrent in this and other details. The weed biology and ecology guide gives more detailed information regarding the plant and flower structures.

Weeds are listed both under common names and under botanical names. The same weed may be listed under more than one common name, where a weed is often known by more than one common name in the cotton industry. The different common names will still lead the reader to the plant under its accepted common name. The accepted common names are the common names listed by Sheperd et. al. (2001), except in a couple of cases, where no common name is listed, or where a weed is almost universally known throughout the cotton industry under a different name.

This guide is still being developed. Additional biology and ecology information and additional weeds will be added to the collection as this material becomes available.
