Birds of a feather stick to cotton

A study of birds on cotton farms in the Namoi region has found 138 species, including rare, common and pest categories.

Rob Welsh, Resource Management Specialist with the Cotton Catchment Communities CRC and the NSW DPI, said these findings suggest both an amazing diversity of birdlife in cotton growing regions and an obviously attractive environment for birds to feed and breed.

The Cotton CRC-funded study has lead to the development of some important management tips for conserving birds and enhancing their longevity in cotton landscapes that can be incorporated in most cotton and ancillary cropping operations.

Rob Welsh said the majority of farms in the Namoi catchment support a diverse range of habitats suitable for native wildlife, with dual benefits for the environment and the sustainability of cotton production.

“Birds also provide significant natural pest control and are a key component in integrated pest management systems,” he said.

Further details of the study will be revealed at a special “Birds in Cotton” field day to be held on Friday 31st of August 2007, starting at 8.45 at the Wee Waa Bowling Club, Alma Street, Wee Waa and concluding at 1.00pm.

Guest speakers will include David Freudenberger and David Carr from Greening Australia, and participants will also be transported to two local cotton farms for a practical insight into the research results.

These presentations will be taking place at the bowling club before travelling to “Lammermoor” at Merah North.

The field day will highlight management practices designed to enhance and retain individual bird species in the local landscapes, including the benefits of maintaining areas of remnant vegetation.

Refreshments will be provided. For catering purposes, intending visitors are asked to please RSVP by Thursday August 30 to Rob Welsh at the Cotton CRC Narrabri 02 67992476 or rob.welsh@dpi.nsw.gov.au.

This day is supported by the Cotton CRC, Commonwealth Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry, NSW Department of Primary Industries, QLD Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries and the Namoi Catchment Management Authority
