Taking Science to the Classroom\

National trends show the number of students going onto university to study sciences and agriculture is declining. To turn this trend around a new education project has been established by the Cotton Catchment Communities CRC (Cotton CRC).
Cotton CRC Communities Program Leader, Paula Jones, said the Cotton CRC is committed to supporting science and agriculture education in schools through the funding of an Education Officer.
This is an important project as it aims to promote science and agriculture in schools through the development and facilitation of school-based learning activities in cotton communities and nearby towns.
The role of Education Officer involves working with students, teachers, scientists and government education agencies to implement activities which encourage the uptake of science and agriculture subjects by students.
Trudy Staines, will be taking on the role of Education Officer (part time) which will be based at the Australian Cotton Research Institute, Narrabri. Ms Staines is well qualified to take on this role with invaluable technical skills in science and agriculture as well as extensive experience in science education.
Ms Staines will continue to be employed by CSIRO and share her time between her new role and other existing CSIRO project commitments.
“I am looking forward to my new role as I understand the importance of education and am passionate about encouraging student participation in both science and agriculture, ultimately this will lead to a strong, prosperous and sustainable industry for rural Australia” said Ms Staines.
