Dr Michael Bange - Cotton Agronomy, Fibre Quality
Dr Michael Bange's career in cotton research spans over 12 years and has led to his current role of Senior Principal Research Scientist with CSIRO and the Cotton CRC. His research has provided numerous positive outcomes for the Australian cotton industry, and has greatly improved knowledge across many facets of cotton growing. He is currently exploring and implementing methods to improve the cotton industry’s access to climate information, and is instigating a program that will help improve understanding and integration of the impacts of environment and crop managment on fibre quality. Michael has also undertaken research into plant population and sowing time effects on Bollgard II® cotton. Over the years Michael has mentored many young researchers and industry personnel. His overall expertise in cropping systems research was acknowledged in 2009 when he was awarded with a distinguished the Austrlia Cotton Industry Researcher of the Year. Mike has also been a pioneer for the Cotton CRC in developing international collaborations, especially in the areas of irrigation, climate change and plant stress responses. He is also currently a group and project leader within CSIRO and leads a group of scientists, Post‐Doctoral Fellow and students. Mike has been a key figure in developing the bid for an extension of the CRC, taking leadership of the proposed Carbon and Energy program. This latter role is the specific reason why we are honouring him with the Achiever award.
