Professor Peter Gregg
Cotton CRC Chief Scientist

Background: Between 1980 and 2006 Professor Gregg was responsible for research and supervision of honours and postgraduate research students, and postdoctoral fellows, in insect pest management at the University of New England. Also responsible for undergraduate teaching for second, third and fourth year Rural Science students in agricultural ecology, plant protection and insect pest management amd a joint Program Leader (Innovative Technologies), in the Australian Cotton CRC (1999-2005).

Current Activities: Chief Scientist of the Cotton Catchment Communities CRC, responsible for the overall science program of the Cotton CRC and management of The Farm and The Product programs.  Professor at UNE, and 30% of this time is devoted to personal research and supervision of postgraduate students

Qualifications: B.Rur.Sc. (Hons), UNE 1972, M.Rur.Sc (UNE 1976), PhD (ANU, 1981)

Expertise: Research interests include alternatives to insecticides for pest management in cotton, especially chemical ecology of insect pests including plant volatile attractants and pheromones for Helicoverpa spp. and mirids. Professor Gregg also worked on the ecology of Helicoverpa spp. in non-cropping areas, especially semi-arid inland Australia, biological control of cotton pests, insect phenology and development in relation to the environment, methods for monitoring migration and local movement of moths, including tower mounted light traps, stable isotopes, mark-recapture techniques and pollen as a marker of origin, reproductive behaviour and pheromone biology of noctuid moths, diapause and development, especially the endocrine aspects of embryonic development in grasshoppers and locusts, and ecological aspects of GM crops.

Achievements: Professor Gregg has published approximately 170 research papers and conference presentations and have been sole or joint holder of 62 external competitive research grants totalling over $4 million. Major past and current funding bodies include the Australian Research Council, Cotton R & D. Corp., Grains R & D Corp., Horticultural R & D Corporation, CRC for Sustainable Cotton Production, Australian Cotton CRC, various consultancies for private enterprise and government bodies, and internal grants. Joint author and inventor of an International Patent for moth attractants, currently in the national phase in Australia, USA, Brazil, and India, and joint author and inventor for a Provisional Patent in Australia for mirid pheromones. Professor Peter Gregg was the instigator and major contributor to a Technology Licensing Agreement with Ag Biotech Australia Pty Ltd for moth attractants.
