Improved Ginning

The ginning industry in Australia is relatively modern, with high throughput compared with ginning industries in other countries. The 35 or so gins in Australia use gin machinery that is designed and manufactured and hence optimised for USA conditions. There are distinct differences between the grades and properties of USA and Australian cotton and it is not clear that the USA designed ginning machinery is optimised for Australian conditions, particularly as evidenced by the nep and high short fibre content in some Australian ginned lint.

CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE), together with the Cotton CRC, are carrying out research on the ginning of Australian cotton to further enhance its qualities and profitability. The ginning research team at CMSE aims to improve the profitability and competitiveness of Australian cotton in international markets by reducing fibre and seed damage in the gin, and by increasing gin efficiency, e.g. improving gin turn-out and reducing energy use.
At present, the ginning team at CMSE is able to advise on:

  • Measuring and managing moisture levels to aide in retention of fibre length, and reduce nep content, short fibre content and trash levels.
  • Lint cleaner settings and modifications to aide in fibre length retention, while reducing nep and trash levels.

Gin-stand settings for reducing residual lint and creating cleaner lint; demonstrating methods of ginning to meet desired requirements.
CMSE has a full scale research gin to allow further research in ginning to increase the quality and profitability of Australian Cotton. The gin plant allows for ginning research to be carried out year round.

There is rewarding innovative research being carried out which will benefit the grower, the ginner and the Australian cotton industry. We are very proud to be a part of this industry and look forward to working with you.
