Groundwater resources support significant agricultural and community development in the Murray Darling Basin. Crops, livestock, non-agricultural industries and regional towns and cities are all users of groundwater. The Cotton Industry relies on access to quality groundwater supplies. Therefore understanding how groundwater systems operate and can be managed is vital.

In recognition of this, a series of workshops have been held throughout cotton growing areas aimed at increasing the knowledge armong water users of how groundwater systems work and the managernent of those systems. The workshop series and associated publications are an initiative of the Cotton Catchment Communities Cooperative Research Centre project "Natural Resource Management delivery in the Australian Cotton lndustry'' as part of the Sustainable Industries Initiative Programme funded through the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

The workshops were held in seven locations across NSW and QLD and were attended by over 90 participants representing growers, consultants, extension offices, catchment bodies and local councils. Workshop content was developed and delivered by the Water Research Laboratory School of Civil and Environmental Engineering University of NSW.
